As announced last month, this column which ends nine years, will be my
final one.  I'd like to acknowledge the many kind messages I've received
in the past month.  Even though I haven't had time to answer each one
individually, I really appreciate the support.  I'd particularly like to
thank the relatives of beta testers, former employees of developers, and
occasional honest-to-goodness insiders who've been kind enough to pass
me a scoop or two.  Being able to accurately describe the LC III a month
before MacWeek was particularly satisfying.  Several people have asked

It should replace pcalc-101.hqx all over the world...

PCalc is a neat simulation of a programmable scientific calculator.

Please note that it *requires* System 7.x.x.
If you use System 6.0.x or earlier, here is what you are missing:

  Programmable functions via a simple mini language.
  System 7.x.x savvy:
      Can be controlled & programmed via Apple Events.
      Balloon Help for every button, menu & dialog item.
      Resolves Aliases.
      32-bit clean.
      Multifinder aware.
  Large 16+3 digit display.
  Hierarchical menu of user functions.
  Includes many functions for converting between different weights and measures.
  Quick, one click, conversion between decimal, hexadecimal and binary numbers.
  AND, OR, NOT, XOR, ROL, ROR and other extra functions in hex and binary mode.
  30 named user constants, 10 for each mode.
  'Undo' of any action.
  'Minimize' button to shrink the calculator when not in use.
  Enhanced graphics when viewed on a 256 colour or 16 gray (or better) screen.
  Colour graphics and help screens are stored in separate plug-in extensions.
  Runs on any Mac with System 7.x.x or greater, with or without Color Quickdraw.

And of course it's freeware. If you only download one calculator this year,
give this a try...

Version 1.0.2 fixes some bugs that caused problems on colour macs, notably
those with 16 and 24-bit displays. Vast speed increases too on some 8-bit
screens. Shouldn't turn bright orange at inconvenient moments either. Some
other silent bug-fixes and support for the ',' key as a decimal separator.

(More importantly, there are a ton of new easter eggs ;-)

Right On Time is a personal time manager.  It features a calendar, To-Do list,
reminders, and even a menubar clock.  You can set up repeating events, be
warned ahead of time about upcoming events, archive old events, assign
categories to events, play sounds, manage your to-do list, etc. (similar
features as Now Up To Date, First Things First, DateBook, and others)  The
calendar is useful just by itself for looking up dates and printing out monthly
calendars.  Right On Time requires system 6 or later, takes advantage of color
monitors, and is system 7 friendly (supports required AppleEvents, and 1 custom
AppleEvent).  No extensions are needed!  This is a demo version limited to 5
events.  The real version is shareware, $15.

Some new features in version 2.0 include:
You can double-click to edit events from the Monthly view, nicer List view,
to-do items, menubar clock, more preferences, hot key to bring to front, easier
to enter times, many other enhancements, and a few bug fixes.

(this should replace both version 1.0 and 1.5, which are currently in the
archives)

Subject: [*] AppleTalkOn Extension

Here is a companion to my ToggleAT FKEY for PowerBooks (and other machines).
It is called AppleTalkOn and it is an appe (background application or
application extension) that runs all the time.  It snarfs very little CPU
time and about 20K of memory.  It basically does nothing except at shutdown
and launch.  At shutdown it records the state of AppleTalk, turns it on
and then quits.  When it starts back up on the next boot, it turns AppleTalk
back off if it was off when it quit and then goes to sleep.  Not too tricky
but it manages to keep AppleTalk loaded into memory, and that's its major
goal.

There are some minor caveats and side effects.  Most notably, if you have
File Sharing turned on then it will start up before the machine will restart.
This is bogus but I haven't felt the need to come up with a workaround.
Anything I did do would involve taking control of File Sharing and I am
hesitant to do that.  You will notice that your machine won't restart if you
are suffering from this problem.  Also, this will not work if you crash,
but AppleTalkOn will turn AT on, regardless, next time it boots and/or restarts.

Anyhow, it's a hack and its free.  It's also available on ftp.apple.com in
/pub/pugh.

AUSPICE Version 3.0.1

Auspice is a reminder system which will automatically remind you of events
at any time the Auspice program is running, even if it is in the
"background" while you are using another application.  Normally you will
make Auspice a "startup" application (see below) allowing it to
automatically start and run all of the time your Mac is running.

Developed by Wayne K. Meyers, 1283 Mary Lee Way, San Jose, CA 95118.

use and as an exercise in Macintosh C programming (Symantec's THINK C is
outstanding!). Auspice is free and you are welcome to distribute copies.

New features in version 3.0.1:
•  Version 3.0.1 is a major rewrite eliminating the Auspice init and
allowing each Auspice reminder to be displayed at a specific time rather
than just at startup as in previous versions.  This requires the use of
MultiFinder with System 6 or the use  of System 7.
•  Custom Holidays  you can now add "custom holidays" for holidays
outside of the USA or to display additional holidays, anniversaries etc.
The standard USA holidays can be turned on or off.  The holidays are
stored in the Auspice Preferences file along with other preference
information.
•  There is now an option to automatically save (write to disk) after
every change to a reminder.
•  Auspice can now be "iconized", closing all open windows and displaying
one small window.  It can be "deiconized" by clicking on the small icon
window.
•  Improved the reminder entry dialog, allowing better use of "tab" to
move to next field, "shift tab" to move backwards, and "up" and "down"
arrow keys to change dates and times.
•  A ØFindæ feature was added to allow searching for a reminder containing
a specified message, date, or time or portion thereof.
•  An ØExportæ feature was added to allow all reminders to be copied to a
text file.  This was added primarily to allow the reminders to be printed
from the exported text file since Auspice does not yet have printing
capability.

New features in version 3.0:
•  This version, with extremely limited release, contains a bug in the pop
up memos.

New features in version 2.6:
•  Weekday names and month names now obtained from System resource to get
the names in correct language if a non USA System is in use.
•  New international version created with Netherlands holidays.

New features in version 2.5:
•  An option to have the Auspice Init automatically write a record of each
reminder issued.  This record is written into a TEXT file.  The TEXT file
is selected via the "History" menu item in the Auspice application.

New features in version 2.4:
•  An option to have the Auspice application access data files other than
the primary data file located in the startup System folder.  This was
primarily designed to allow access across a network to see the calendars
of others in a workgroup.
•  Automatic handling of international dates in Day/Month/Year order if
appropriate for the country.
•  New international version created with New Zealand holidays.

New features in version 2.1:
• Added a "Calendar" window to display calendar for selected month/year
and to show the number of warnings and events scheduled for each date.

    These quicktime movies were created using RTrace1.0,
by Antonio Costa, Reid Judd, and Greg Farrar.  The "demo"
movie was created using the demo scene that comes with RTrace.
The eye moves around the scene in a circular path of radius 25,
at a height of 25 over the scene.  Both 8 bit and 24 bit movies
are included, each at 15 frames per sec.  It took about 3 hours
to generate all 150 frames needed on a IIfx.  Note: all
included movies require at least Quicktime 1.5.

    The "swoop" movies used a scene file that I set up after
learning how to write the scene info in the .sff
format (simple file format).  A quick how-to is provided
in the RTrace documentation.  Also 150 images, these movies
use parametric equations to describe the eye motion.
Included again are 8 bit and 24 bit versions.

The "4 balls" are the same scene as in "swoop", but
the movie is a series of frames in simple circular
rotation over the scene, similar to "demo".

If anyone else out there has produced similar
movies, I'd love to check them out.

Description:

System 7's drop-launching features are a nice idea, but
there is a catch: in order to drop documents onto an
application, you need to have the application on the
desktop, or in some other open window.  This one problem is
probably the single greatest impediment to realizing the
full potential of drop-launching.  In the past, you had
basically two choices: either fill up your desktop with an
array of various application icons, to keep them available
for drop-launching, or keep your desktop clean, and limit
your use of drop-launching to rare occasions.

LaunchPad changes all that.

LaunchPad is a simple utility designed to let you keep a
clean desktop, but still maintain convenient access to
System 7's drop-launching features.  LaunchPad serves as a
drag-and-drop dock for any applications that you choose.
You simply drag documents to the LaunchPad icon, and then
select an application to launch from the "get file" dialog.
The dropped documents will then be opened using the selected
application (if possible).

With LaunchPad, you keep your desktop clean and take
advantage of System 7's drop-launching.  LaunchPad also
provides a drop-printing feature.

So why use drop-launching or LaunchPad?  If this question
comes to mind, then you are probably one of the many people
who have yet to experience just how convenient drop-
launching can be.  Drop-launching makes many tasks much
easier.  See the enclosed documentation for useful examples.

LaunchPad requires approximately 30K of disk space, and as
little as 40K of RAM.

The "Magellan at Venus" PictureBook, created from an existing slide set
distributed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California,
contains a selection of 20 of some of the most intriguing images and
image mosaics of the surface of Venus, including views of mountains,
plains, volcanoes, and impact craters.  The captions accompanying the
pictures provide information about these surface features, including
their location in latitude and longitude, a general description, and
"guesses" as to what the features might represent in geological terms.
The text also provides information about the images themselves, such as
the date the image was acquired, and the image resolution.

The PictureBook is built on a Hypercard stack and is designed to run on a
Macintosh computer with HyperCard 2.1 and QuickTime 1.5.

This PictureBook is one of a series being produced by the Exploration in
Education (ExInEd) program at the Special Studies Office of the Space
Telescope Science Institute.

This is MacMud 3.2 (comp) a Multi User TCP/IP based text adventure game.
MacMud is a port of the popular unix game LPMud and can run both multi-
user using MacTCP 1.1 or MacTCP 1.1.1, or in single-user mode by opening
multiple windows for each player connection on the same machine. MacMud
can also run as a background-only daemon by simply setting the Background-
only flag in the SIZE resources.

MacMud is essentially an LPC game driver (LPC is an interpreted subset
of object C of sorts), which executes the adventure game source code
which is written in LPC (commonly called a Mudlib). The game has two
classes of users: players and wizards. Initially you start out as a
player and advance through levels and then you reach wizardhood.

Wizards can extend the adventure world by writing objects which can
be added while the game is running.

Enclosed is a personal references stack I've been working on fairly
intermitently for the last couple of years. It allows you to keep a file of
the references pertinent to your work, to view them easily and to do
various searches on them. You can also print them all out, export them to
the clipboard, etc.
It doesn't yet handle the standard ACM references format (but it might one
day!).
It's easy to use, so I won't say much about that side of it. An example
file of references and cursory instructions are provided.

AxoCalculator is a general purpose scientific calculator, and
a multi-language development environment. Standard scientific
functions (sin, cos, exp, ... ) and statistical calculations
are supported. Calculations are performed by typing them into
the editor window then pressing "enter". This approach
maintains a record which can be cross-checked or printed.

Programs and functions can be written in Pascal, Fortran,
Basic or C and executed by AxoCalculator's multi-language
interpreter. Programs can interact with the user via standard
dialogs. They can be assigned names which are then appended to
the "Calculator" menu. Programs can be automatically loaded
onto the menu each time AxoCalculator is run.

Calculator II is a pleasant looking color multi-function calculator that
runs as an application under system 6.x or System 7.  The calculator was
written as an application to be run under MultiFinder or System 7 alongside
other applications.  It improves on Apple's original calculator by adding
trigonometric functions, functions for base 10 and natrual logorithms and
their inverses, hex-to-decimal and decimal-to-hex conversion, a memory
function for storing values across uses of the program, and all of these
functions can be invoked by using the F-Keys on the Apple Extended keyboard
(F5 - F15).  The calculator also allows users to correct trailing digits of
values entered on the display of the calculator through the use of a
backspace key.  Balloon help and general information about the program is
available under either the Help menu under System 6.x or the Balloon Help
menu under System 7.  This software is being distributed as FREEware so
give it a try and let me know what you think!

This file contains TrueType, bitmap, and Adobe Type 1 printer fonts for a
Persian (Farsi) font.  I received the font in Windows TrueType format from
Tooraj Enayati ([e-mail]) and converted it using
Chris Reed's TTConverter 1.3 and Ares Software Corp. FontMonger 1.0.5.  It
is a very simple implementation--it does not contain font management
software (i.e., that would change the letter's form depending on whether
it's at the beginning, middle, or end of a word), but it works beautifully!
 It is a hqx'd self-extracting Stuffit file.

AlphaTrecker 2.0

This file replaces all earlier versions (1.0 and 1.0.1) of AlphaTrecker.

AlphaTrecker is a faceless background application (FBA) system extension
that plays sound tracks (also known as MOD files) when you start up your
Mac. This is the same kind of file as SoundTrecker, by Frank Seide, plays.
AlphaTrecker plays all the MOD files it finds in the Preferences folder,
in a random sequence. You can place aliases of your MOD files in the
Preferences folder instead of the files themselves.

AlphaTrecker requires System 7 or higher and a 68020 processor or higher.

QWK 1.30

  This is a simple QWK-format offline mail reading package.
In order to use it, you also need a good text editor, and
a program to extract the contents of .ZIP files.  I recommend
BBEdit 2.2 and UnZIP 2.0, together with a patch that's floating
around out there to add word-wrapping capability to BBEdit.
Of course, you need a terminal program too.

  Instead of staying online, connected to a BBS for
many minutes, or sometimes even hours, reading th emessages, and
composing your replies to them, many BBSes now offer you
the option of downloading all your new messages as a
.QWK packet.  You can then decode and read the messages offline,
compose your replies, and upload your replies in the form
of a .REP packet.  Even if it takes you hours to read and
reply to all your messages, you only have to spend a
few minutes actually connected to the BBS.

  This package consists of a program called QWK, which will
convert the contents of a .QWK packet into a readible text
file, which you may read with any text editor, and another
program called REP, which will take a text file created by
you, containing all of your replies and new messages,
and convert it to a .REP packet that yu may upload to
the BBS to post your messages.

Dear All,

A week ago I sent out a request for information about the built-in ethernet
connection in a Centris 650 (as in our College Microstore didn't want me to
use it). I enclose the responses I received for filing as a report.

The consensus is that the inbuilt connector is the thing to use, with the
caveat that Apple's self-terminating transponders may cause problems. One
respondent seems to have had very bad problems with Quadra 700s, cause
unknown.

Subject: Tiny Saver 2.0b5



Tiny Saver is a very small screen saver.  It does just what a
screen saver is supposed to do and not much else.  It is an
application so no conflicts but it only uses about 30k of RAM
12 of disk space.  This version is a 'background only appliation'
so it only uses 12k of RAM when it is in not actually saving the
screen.  Being a FBA it will not show up in the application
menu and won't always end up in your face when you quit other
applications.  It is a nifty (IMHO) blend of the features of
a system extension with the reliability of an application.

This archive also includes a non-background version for those
who fear the unkown ;-]

TeleFinder User v3.02. TeleFinder/User 3.02 supports the same custom
appleevents as TeleFinder Pro 2.02 with the following exceptions:

* kAEDoScript - is not supported since TeleFinder User does not do  Macros.

* kAEConnectToHost - accepts a modem setup name rather than a host name.

* kAEAddToOutbox - ignores the bbs name paramter.

Supra users and others may notice that it is easier to connect to
TeleFinder Hosts with this newer version of the client software.

Subject: getting .z files and nixpub long list (01/23/93) submission

A few days ago some people asked about how to transfer, decompress
files with .z format. After some simple experiments I got everything
through. My way may not be elegent, but it could be done under the
restricted resoources as I have now.

Ok, here it is.


How to do a file transfer from unix box with .Z format through a IBM
mainframe to a local Macintosh:

1.    binary ftp
    (preserve the 8-bit character compressed format?)

2.    compress fn z fm (decompress lrecl 128
    invoke the compress utility that is available in the CMS version
    and able to deal with .Z, the unix compressed format. lrecl 128
    is used because CMS Kermit can do binary file transfer only for
    file with logical record length less than 128 bytes (unit?).
    option decompress is used to decompress file which is named as fn
    z fm.

3.    Kermit
    invoke CMS Kermit

4.    set file binary

5.    uncheck all the conversion and filter options of the local
    telecomm program

6.    check binary file transfer (not MacBinary) for local telecomm
    programs's  Kermit file transfer protocol

7.    do the file transfer

8.    use your favor utility/text processor to replace line feed
    character, (ASCII 10, or <LF>) with carriage return character
    (ASCII 13, or <CR>)

Following these procedures, and with the help of White Knight and
BBEdit, I could successfully get nixpub_long_list from ftp site
pit-manager.mit.edu under directory /pub/usenet/comp.misc/. The file
format is very close to the format of the old list found in the
Info-Mac archive.

As for nixpub_long_list, it gives information for --Open Access UNIX
(*NIX) Sites [both Fee and No Fee]--. This list was published on
January 28, 1993. It should be useful to people who are interested in
Internet availability, from simple net mail to ftp, telnet, news
feed, etc. For more details about such connection, check out

Open Spaces is a system 7 extension which makes navigating through
folders in the Finder easier. When you are not renaming something,
hitting the space bar opens the currently selected file or folder.
This enables you to move around with just the arrow keys and the
space bar, or to open files more easily. When you are renaming
something, the space bar acts normally.

Version 1.2 corrects the behavior of Open Spaces with dialog boxes
opened by Control Panels.
Version 1.2 also contains a bug fix for 68000 machines.

The way-tiny, minuscule, little clock program.

What it is
attoClock is a very small application (6378 bytes) for System 7 that displays a
digital clock in a small window. It has intentionally few features. It displays
the hour and minute, respecting the time format you have set in your control
panels. It doesn't display seconds or the date or ring chimes or display movies
or pictures or animations. Just the time.

Version history
1.2    Completely redesigned memory management. AppleEvent-awareness added.
Right-justification of time in window added. Brings Finder to the front rather
than remaining the active application at launch time.
1.1.2    Enabled formatting unreadable diskettes. Not released.
1.1.1    Removed needless Edit menu. Not released.
1.1    Added date to about box. Not released.
1.0.1    Changed file permission from Write to Read in the preferences reading

This is Version 1.1 of "What You Need to Know about Modems" and
should replace the file info-mac/report/modem-guide-10.txt. The
author is Patrick Chen.

Although this document dated back on May 31, 1992, it still contain
many modem related FAQ which explains high speed modem, error control
protocol, data compression protocol, Fax modem protocol, how to
choose a high speed modem, how to set up software to work with high
speed modem, configuring those popular communication software to work
with high speed modem, other settings like data bits, parity, stop
bits, duplex, terminal emulatiion, file transfer protocols, etc.

I got this file from Mike Ruicci <[e-mail]> who posted
it to comp.dcom.modems a few days ago. Thanks, Mike.

custom RAutoTypers,S which are very small applications that automatically make a
specific change to files dropped on them. For instance, you can create an
AutoTyper which changes the creator of TEXT files to the creator of your
favorite RGIFS program. For more information, see the MakeAutoTyper

New with version 4.0 is an extension that adds a FileTyper command to the
FinderUs File menu, so you can have quick access to FileTyper without cluttering

This package may be of interest to people who prepare research proposals to
the National Science Foundation and would rather complete the required
forms on the Mac instead of on a typewriter.

Included are Word 4/5 and Excel 4 documents that are formatted to look like
the original forms on screen. The idea is to complete the forms on the
computer and then send the whole thing to printer.

The NSF Cover Sheet, Certification Page, and Current & Pending Support
forms are Word 5 tables. The Budget Template is an Excel 4 worksheet with a
macro that generates a set of blank forms with the right number of project
years and an automated summary page. To get the right results, you need a
Postscript printer and screen sizes of Times and Helvetica 9, 10, 12 and
14.

These forms shouldn't be regarded as anything official; they look very
authentic, and we have been using them for several years without complaint
from NSF or our University officials. These are being shared with the hope
that your decision makers will accept them as well. Comments and

Menuette alters the appearance of menu titles in the menu bar (at the top of
your screen). Instead of the words that normally appear (such as File and
Edit), you'll see small icons representing these concepts. You can instantly
switch between icon and text views if you wish; if you do so, Menuette allows

I don't know what's worse, having people report bugs or finding them yourself
and wondering what those people were doing.  In this case I found a silly one
myself and made a few changes based on some user feedback.  When I changed
the code for MENU resources, I inadvertantly forgot to check the status of
the variable I set to tell if a menu was enabled, which resulted in all
menu items being enabled, even if they weren't.  They didn't look any
different, but if you let the mouse up on a disabled item it was returned
anyhow.  I guess not many people use disabled items in popups, but I do,
so I fixed it.  In addition, I beefed up the error checking.  I was bailing
on errors and leaving menus allocated.  Now I delete them.  That was just
sloppy.  I also fixed a check I was making for the error of too many menu
items.  It turns out that I fixed the limit but forgot to fix the check for
it, until now.  You can now have an unlimited number of items in your menus,
but you can only have 300 submenus.

In case you don't know, this Hypercard external implements a popup menu
wherever you want.  You can specify where you want the menu to appear and
what menu item you want to appear under the mouse, plus whether or not you
want a check mark on that item.  You can specify the font and size too.
In addition you can create big menus with up to 300 hierarchical menus
hanging off of them.  You can put in a single item which will expand out
to a list of resources.  You can also use MENU resources instead of specifying
a string.  This can work faster since it doesn't need to be parsed like
the strings do.

Talk v1.1.0 & Talkd v1.1.0 is an implementation of the UNIX Talk
protocol for Macs with MacTCP.  Talkd is a background only application
that notifies you when a talk connection is requested, and Talk is a
talk client, allowing you to talk to other machines. Talk and Talkd
work with both System 6 and 7.

This is basically a bug fix release.  I keep saying "Talk really needs
a major rewrite", but I keep not doing it, so I may as well make the
current version available.

Changes since v1.0.6:
~Option to automatically connect to incoming talk requests.
~Dimmed the Talk button when an invalid address was selected.
~Changed RecieveKey to use TEInsert instead of TEKey to avoid TE calling
ShieldCursor
~Added Zoom state preserving.
~Preserve text selection across RecieveKey - still flickers though :(
~Support selecting a particular terminal to talk to.

MacBinary II+ is a System 7 drag&drop converter for MacBinary files.  It
has no User Interface, simply drop a MacBinary file on it and it will be
decoded, drop any other file or folder on it and it will be encoded.
MacBinary II+ should be fully compatible with all current MacBinary
encoders/decoders, and extends the format to include folder hierarchies
(although no other decoder will be able to decode folder hierarchy
MacBinary files created by MacBinary II+).

Version 1.0.1 corrects a problem that stopped MacBinary II+ from
recognizing MacBinary I files.  I don't normally like posting such
a minor change, but since I don't have any grand plans for the program
anyway, and since the problem is fairly noticable, I decided to post
this fixed version.

MacBinary II+ should work on any System 7 Mac.  If it doesn't, let me know.

                   Grapher Information

   Grapher is a function graphing program, intended as a
low-cost (but powerful) tool for students and
researchers.  Functions are entered in the standard
BASIC notation (e.g. 2*x; cos(x^3); 3*x-sqrt(x)) with
the usual order of operations assumed.  Several
functions may be graphed on the same set of axes. The
program supports the standard menus for saving and
loading files, printing, and copying graphs as PICT
graphics to the clipboard.  Other features include
zooming in on parts of the graph, zooming out, and
locating solutions and intercepts.  Use the "Help" menu
for directions.

   The program is shareware - see the "About" box for

Version 3.61 (3/16/93): Added many new functions.  Moved

Hope you like it, but more importantly, I hope you find it useful.
Here's the poop.

PowerStrip should have no problem running on a PowerBook, Duo, or Portable
that's running System 7.  I have no way of testing it on other machines or
versions of the Mac OS since my one and only machine is a PB100, so I take
no responsibility for any adverse effects caused by PowerStrip.

New version (2.0) info:
1. Version 2.0 saves it's data/preferences file to the Preferences folder,
in a file called PowerStripPrefs.

2. You now have the option of displaying it across the bottom or the top of
the screen.  I found there were so many applications that left more room at
the top than the bottom, I had to add this.

3. Window height is now proportional to font size.  Geneva @ 9 points is
the smallest and the most legible.  The window takes up only 7 pixels
across the screen.  IF ANYONE HAS A SMALLER AND STILL LEGIBLE FONT, LET ME
KNOW!

4. There is now a battery load graph.  It graphs the voltage level over the
last two minutes.  You can hide this graph, if you want.  It will still
update even though it's hidden.

USAGE:
The best way to use it is to drop it or an alias of it into the Startup
Items folder in your System Folder.  That way you won't forget to start it
up.

WHAT IT DOES:
"PowerStrip" tracks the elapsed time of battery and AC-charging sessions.
When tracking the battery session, the counter is NOT incremented during
sleep states.  When tracking AC charging sessions,  it DOES increment
during sleep states.  Neither counter increments during powered off states.

It also displays available space on your hard drive, available RAM, the
speed of the CPU, the on/off state of AppleTalk, and on/off state of the
internal modem, if any.

"PowerStrip" does it's best to save settings between sessions.  It saves
fontsize, style, and family, and if it exits in one state and starts up in
the same state (exit on battery and start up on battery), it picks up where
it left off. (It assumes you've rebooted.)


CAVEATS:
You can get REMARKABLE battery session durations by plugging in the charger
while the Powerbook is asleep, and unplugging it before it wakes up.  Get
it?  It won't know that it's been jacked in, so it won't reset the counter.
  Best thing to do is to change the connection state while the machine is
"awake", or use the menu command "count zero" to decrement the counter to
zero.  (Thanks to William G. for that one.)

The accompanying PICT file is a 640x480 16-bit color scan of the above named
work, suitable for using as a background screen on a 13" or 14" monitor.  The
screen looks fantubulous when you set your screen depth to 16 bits, but it
looks fine in 8-bit color or 8-bit greyscale.

At the request of the moderator, I'll be limiting my posts of these Giger
screens to one per week.  Since 640x480 is the most common color monitor
size out there, I'll be uploading those first.  If you've got a 16" or
19" monitor and can't wait 'till I get around to posting these versions
(if I ever do) drop me a note in e-mail, and we'll see about sending you them
on disk.

A thread dealing with producing a formatted TEXT file from
(arbitrary) Macintosh programs appeared in some recent issues of
Info-Mac Digest. The messages making up this thread had the titles:

The attached binhexed self-expanding archive contains:
1. "RFC Format dialog" which is a chronology of all the messages
   (that I've seen) from the thread (including both those posted to
   Info-Mac Digest and those sent directly to me), and my comments
   and suggestions based on that discussion. Basically, I recommend
   the creation of a new Print2Pict extension (which I call the
   "ASCII Page Image" extension) and I propose some specifications
   for its operation.
2. a copy of the text version of RFC 1111 as FTPed from NIC.DDN.MIL.
3. a copy of RFC 1111 as edited (by me) to make it a Microsoft Word
   document.

I sure do. I went through this same loop last summer with my own SE/30 with
a Sony drive. I had to do some research on behalf of my qualified Apple
dealer, natch, but got a free replacement. Now he sounds most
knowledgeable, as I discovered when I phoned him last week in relation to
the firm's machine, until I got to the word "Quantum", whereapon: problem
not known. I thought the Quantum problem was more widely known, but
strangely, nobody has (yet) confirmed it in response to my query last week.

Microsoft Word print-merge documents. Other than that, you should find that
CONTACTS+ is just about as powerful and usable as any other `commercial'
Contacts database/manager.
    When exporting print-merge data, the FullAddress field would replace all
the individual fields that make up the receipient's address. You should also
export the title, firstname and lastname fields, to be used in the greeting
line, ie Dear [title] [firstname] [lastname]... Other fields do not have to be
exported.

      Hello, this version will replace all other versions of Beyond Midi Demo
that were at this site. I am not the author of this program, just a person who
has used this demo and found it very easy to understand as well as being
excellently written. I do not own a MIDI or a keyboard but have been interested
in programs that allow you to use the macs internal sound board to create
music. This is the first program that I have been truly impressed with enough to
brag about it and show my support for it. The demo uses the macs interenal
sound channels to play midi sequences on it using the given set of instruments
that are included with the demo (The full version of course will be better
supported and with a manual). Although there is not a brief user manual
included it shouldn't be too hard to figure out once you open it up. For those
of you who do download this demo I should point out that it will stop after
10-15 minutes. WHY?  Because it's a demo! The following text is a list of
improvements over the other versions that had been released, as well as bug
fixes.

 Just click on the instruments primary channel and a new dialog pops up that
 allows you to set up to 8 different channels of layering.
19.) Added Sample support with the Mac Setup dialog box. This allows you to
 use your Mac as a synthesizer for simple melodies or sound effects. Place any
 sound you like either in the system folder or in the file 'BeySounds' and
 they will be accessible in this dialog. On slower computers you can only
 play one sound at a time. When playing multiple sounds simultaneously on
 faster computers you will notice timing fluctuations (when using VIA timer in
 preferences) and sometimes pops and crackles (although this is mostly
 eliminated when MIDI Manager or Time Manager is in use). Heavy use of
 background tasks or INIT's that use interrupts heavily, is discouraged.
 Also, System 6.07 or greater is recommended because it contains the enhanced
 sound manager. Beyond uses a technique in real time to discover if the
 machine has enough processor power to continue playing. In some cases, this
 may cause Beyond to stop playing notes. The easiest way to avoid this, is to
 leave Beyond as the foreground application and just let it play without
 pulling menus or dragging the thumbs of scrollbars. Currently Beyond's
 internal MIDI interpretation engine only recognizes NoteOn and NoteOff
 Commands (channels 9-16 are mapped to channels 1-8), and All notes off
 command. All others are ignored although future enhancements may include
 PitchBend,Volume control, Modulation, Sustain pedal, etc.,.The internal
 metronome now uses the Beyond's internal MIDI interpretation engine, so in
 order to use it, you must install a sound in a given channel and then set the
 metronome to use the internal channel corresponding to that sound. Beyond's
 Sound Engine is completely compatible with the sound manager, However
 programs like sound master, when used in conjunction, eat up all the sound
 channels and will not let sounds be played in other applications. Therefore
 use of sound master with beyond is not recommended, although this problem is
 minor. Scrubbing is partially supported by only one note at a time.
20.    Fixed a bug that caused a crash when notes of a duration greater than
 65535 we're recorded either directly or imported in a MIDI file. Also, long
 notes (>65535) we're not recorded properly in MIDI files.
21.    Fixed a bug that caused a crash when controller's we're played using
 layers that I inadvertently introduced when I added Time Manager Support.
22.    Fixed a bug that caused a crash when you went to the MIDI monitor
 without any memory.
23.    Extract Program Names
    Allows you to use sysex dumps to inform beyond of you current program
 names for your devices. Right now each port can have a list of program names.
 This will be changed later to allow you to assign particular channels on a
 given port to program names. For the time being this means that all channels
 1-16, say on the Modem port, will be assigned the same names. This new dialog
 allows you to extract programs from the currently selected track. It assigns
 the names to the currently selected tracks' port.
    A giant popup menu allows you to select programs from the Note editor,
 List Editor and Instruments window. Supported devices as of  are:
        1) Korg M1
        2) Roland D110
        3) Yamaha DX21
        4) Proteus (Not Completely Tested)

AutoLock is a small application intended to alleviate some problems
associated with running children's applications (games, etc.) under the
System 7 Finder.  AutoLock can help to prevent small children from
accidentally sending a game to the background.  In addition, AutoLock
can salvage many old (but good!) games that are virtually impossible
to use under System 7.

Many existing children's applications were designed to run under
Finder, rather than under MultiFinder.  As most parents already know,
running these programs under MultiFinder allows a child to
accidentally send the application into the background, usually by
inadvertently clicking the mouse outside of the application window.  In
the old days, this problem could be avoided by moving the system
back to Finder mode.  For users of System 7, however, this alternative
is no longer available, since the system runs in a permanent
MultiFinder-type mode.

Furthermore, unlike the System 6 MultiFinder, the System 7 Finder
moves to the foreground whenever the mouse is clicked anywhere on
the desktop.  As a result, even recent children's applications can be
accidentally sent to the background by an inadvertent click of the
mouse.  For small children, this can be a serious problem.

AutoLock solves this problem, by terminating the Finder and locking a
single application into the foreground.

AutoLock includes a small extension, LockSmith which can be used to
create AutoLock aliases that launch and automatically lock
applications.  Using an AutoLock alias, launching and automatically
locking an application is as easy as conventional launching.


Changes from version 1.3:

AutoLock 1.3.1 fixes an error that caused version 1.3 to crash on
machines without Color QuickDraw.


Changes from version 1.2:

AutoLock 1.3 now:

  -- provides a Shell Mode, which allows a child to easily start a new
     application after quitting another one.

  -- provides a sound menu and a monitor menu to facilitate the
     adjustment of sound and monitor settings while an application is
     locked.

  -- allows sound and monitor settings to be installed into AutoLock
     aliases, for automatic adjustment of those setting every time
     an alias is launched.

This is not a really new QuickB.PROC RCMD module but this module is
really called NewQuickB.PROC. What happens is that White Knight didn't
support QuickB in its internal engine. Instead, QuickB is support
through White Knight's RCMD module, which is supposed to extend WK's
ability. Before WK 11.13 coming out, there were two such modules, the
original QuickB.PROC and this NewQuickB.PROC. released by WK's author
Scott Watson. The master disk for version after 11.13 comes with
another QuickB.PROC which runs miserably slow compared to this
NewQuickB.PROC. Is there any White Knight veteran willing to explain
this to a novice like me. (How about you, Al?) Anyway, if you use White
Knight and CI$, check this out when you fill impatient about the
download speed.

[To Eric: White Knight do support QuickB protocol in an quite indirect
 way but such module is included in each package of White Knight. Is
 it necessary to change table 3.1.1 in C.S.M.C. Faq? Another question is
 about table 3.1.2 in C.S.M.C Faq. White Knight supports terminal
 emulations TTY, VT52, VT100, VT102. I haven't finish the whole manual
 yet. However, it seems to me that WK doesn't support VT320 unless
 some RCMD module for VT320 does exist.]

old, you may need to contact Aladdin System Inc. to make sure your check,

QuickB DA is a desk accessory written for the CompuServe user who uploads and
downloads frequently.  QuickB is a new protocol which allows for significant
speed gains and time savings when up/downloading from CompuServe.  While some
telecom programs are starting to support the QuickB protocol, many others
do not.  With QuickB DA, you can take advantage of this protocol from within
these telecommunications programs.

Following is a submission of Default Folder 2.31.  It should replace any
previous versions in the archives.

This version fixes a few bugs:
- Prompts were scrambled in the new System 7 StandardPutFile() file dialogs.
- Address errors on 68000 based if the prefs file didn't exist.
- Import didn't understand pathnames containing only a volume name.

Default Folder is a control panel that lets you "link" a default folder to
any  application or desk accessory.  When you launch a desk accessory or a
linked application by itself (ie. not by double clicking on a document),
Default Folder sets things up so the file dialog boxes initially open in
your default folder.

Default Folder can also provide pop-up menus in the file dialog box to
allow you to switch between folders and between volumes.  The folder menu
allows access to:
  1)  The current application or desk accessory's default folder.
  2)  Any one of the last 10 folders you used.
  3)  One of a reserved set of folders "locked" in the menu.
The volume menu allows instant switching to any available volume.  It also
provides "smart volume switching."  Default Folder remembers the last
folder you accessed on each volume, and switches to that folder rather than
to the top of the folder hierarchy when you change disks.  This works with
both the volume menu and the "Drive" button.

Default Folder is System 7 aware, has balloon help, and all that good
stuff, but will run on just about any version of the System.

Here are two extensions for BBEdit that I needed for processing some
mainframe data for importing into a database.

"Insert Column" puts a tab at the current insertion point in every line of the
file.

"Spaces to tabs" replaces all spaces with a tab character.

I don't know where to send the source to, so I just upload these as is.

After being spoiled by using McSink, I won't be truly happy with bbedit
until it contains all the features of Mcsink. :-)

Two down, two dozen more to go...

America Online Download Manager Assistant (AOL DM Assist) 1.0b6

<Even though this utility is only useful to members of America Online,
 I figured I'd go ahead and upload it on the Internet as well (so that
 people can get it a bit easier, and with less cost :). It can be found
 on AOL in the Mac Utilities forum, in the Applications 2 library (new
 versions will be uploaded to AOL MUT quite in advance of appearing on
 the Internet, so check MUT New Files for them).>

This is AOL DM Assist, an unofficial External Tool for use with the America
Online 2.0 software for the Mac. AOL DM Assist is a utility which provides
many features lacking in the Download Manager. It does not replace DM, it
enhances it & complements it. Many of these features are ones that I hope
to see AOL add to the DM in later releases of the File Transfer Tool. Until
then, I've created this. It does not modify, in any way, the America Online
program or any of its Tools, nor does it affect the operation of the AOL
software. The only AOL-related file which this program affects is the
Mailbox files (as selected by the user).

Primarily, AOL DM Assist allows you to manipulate the files in your
Download Manager queues. You can move files up or down in the list to
change the order that they are downloaded. You can easily delete multiple
entries (DM can only delete one entry at a time--try clearing 100 entries
from your Completed Downloads queue that way ;). I also added a "Holding
Queue", so that you can hide entries from the DM to prevent them from being
transferred during a FlashSession while still retaining the file info for
later transfer. You can also reset any file to an untransferred state. Note
that all this must be done while offline and while not running the AOL
software. The AOL DM Assist package also contains ResEdit TMPL's for
editing the file queue resources.

America Online Download Manager Assistant is free (all I ask is that you
send me email with your comments--positive and/or negative--on my little
utility, or suggestions for features that you would like to see in AOL's
Download Manager), though you may send cash if you feel it has saved you
from headaches that the DM alone would have caused--I promise I won't stop
you <grin>.

I am considering writing a similar "External Tool" for improving the mail
interface of AOL--better address lists, multiple "folders" for filing
incoming messages based on subject/source/etc., easier message deletion,
and so forth. This presumes that AOL does not make such improvements
themselves in the near future. If there is something that you would like to
see as far as improvements to AOL's mail or download interface, let me know
and I'll consider them.
